Provenance Archivio Boncompagni Ludovisi Online (PABLO) is an initiative at Rutgers University dedicated to creating a comprehensive provenance database for the collection of the Boncompagni Ludovisi family, both former and present. The Boncompagni Ludovisi family collected sculptures, master paintings, ancient gems, and many other forms of art, which they gathered at their various properties in Rome. While the collection reached its peak in the mid-17th century, today, it is dispersed across the world. This database seeks to compile the provenance of the collection in a single accessible location. To start, the database will focus on the family’s collection of Cameo and Intaglio gems, creating a scalable platform that can expand to include the provenance of various other mediums.

PABLO is a product of an interdisciplinary collaboration between four undergraduate students under the direction of Professor Corey Brennan (Rutgers Classics) and is supported by the School of Arts and Sciences’ Interdisciplinary Research Team program. PABLO falls under the broader initiative of the Archivio Digitale Boncompagni Ludovisi started by Brennan alongside the head of the Boncompagni Ludovisi family, †HSH Prince Nicolò Boncompagni Ludovisi, Principe di Piombino XI, and his wife HSH Princess Rita Boncompagni Ludovisi, Principessa di Piombino XI.

Outside of Rutgers University, the PABLO team extends its sincerest gratitude to Dr. Dorothy Lobel for her suggestions and guidance on our provenance work. We also thank Dr. Kenneth Lapatin and Dr. Judith Barr for their feedback.
